The Phalanges

The bones in the fingers, as well as those in the toes, are known technically as phalanges. Wikipedia defines the phalanges as "digital bones in the hands and feet of most vertebrates."

The bones in the hand itself (as opposed to the fingers) are known as the metacarpals, and those in the foot (as opposed to the toes), as anyone who has followed English football over the last fifteen years or so will know, are known as the metatarsals. Wikipedia's definition (above) therefore implies that the fingers are part of the hand, and the toes are part of the foot. This means that there are four equally acceptable answers to this question: "foot", "toes", "hand" or "fingers".

The singular form of 'phalanges' is 'phalanx'.
